Harmons' Greenhouse Initiative
|
Won By One to Jamaica discovered that Jamaica imports 95% of its vegetables. We wanted to begin a greenhouse project to try and supply some of the market for vegetables and and the need for poor families to have a way to create some income. We spent a year experimenting with a small greenhouse on our property that produced an amazing amount of produce. We have now been provided with six acres not far from the Harmony House where we have launched an agricultural initiative in conjunction with the community and the bauxite mining company. This page will be dedicated to periodic updates of the project. |

March 1, 2010 Third Greenhouse is up! Thanks to two groups in February, the third greenhouse is up and being readied for planting right now! A Men's Trip spent the first week erecting the skeleton of the greenhouse and Tri-County Church was here to put the "skin" on it and haul in the rows of topsoil. This 198 foot greehouse will hold 3,000 pepper plants and 400 tomato plants. |

October 1, 2009 The second greenhouse is planted! Thanks to all the groups this summer that helped prepare the this greenhouse for planting. We have planted 1800 bell pepper plants, 300 scotch bonnet plants, and 1000 tomoato plants. We should be in full production by December and the added produce will increase our sales and allow us to hire more people! We are lining up a men's trip February 14-21 to build the third greenhouse. Email loyd@wonbyonetojamaica.com if you would like to join this effort.

July 15th, 2009 Wow - what a harvest! This is the first picking from our greenhouse - 586 pounds. We will now be reaping once to twice a week. Although many greenhouses have sprung up around the island, few have the quality we have been able to produce. Because we are offering top-notch peppers, we should be able to find a way to easily sell these to the resort community in Jamaica. Looking forward to seeing how God brings that about for this aspect of the ministry! |

April 28th, 2009 Chuck Eddie and Henry Shaffer just returned from Jamaica where they and some of our Jamaican friends planted the first greenhouse. They got all the peppers in their beds (1700 plants). They were about 50 plants short so they left seeds with the Jamaicans to start growing replacements. About 56 Scotch Bonnet pepper plants came up from the seeds that were planted and they will be planted along the outside edge of the greenhouse. The peppers were about 10" - 12" high. They finally got the drip emitter hose run and the pump system going. It takes a lot of water and that is a concern. They put in a huge pond liner in a hole dug by the excavator and since May is the rainy season hopefully it does not leak and will provide most of the water needs. |
