Summer Staff
Beginning in the summer of 2002, Won By One To Jamaica began hosting mission teams comprised of high school youth groups from all over the country. Because the weekly program and activities are more developed than a typical trip during other times of the year, up to 10 Summer Staff will have the opportunity to help facilitate this ministry throughout the summer.
Each year, we accept qualified college students who are willing to commit to 12 weeks of ministry in Harmons. Summer Staff will be serving both the community of Harmons and the student teams who come to work.
Summer Staff FAQ
What are requirements to be eligible for Summer Staff?
1. Have at least one week of prior missions experience in Harmons.
2. Be at least one year out of high school.
3. Completed application and three references must be received.
4. Complete a personal, face-to-face interview.
If one is accepted, a minimum amount of $2000 must be raised to help cover summer expenses.
The minimum amount you must raise will cover: roundtrip airfare to Montego Bay, transportation for the summer, all meals in Harmons and travel days, construction materials, accommodations in Harmons and in Ocho Rios, expenses related to the Summer Staff mid-summer retreat.
If more than $2000 is raised, you have the option of donating all or part of it to Won By One To Jamaica, banking it for a future trip, or receiving that amount at the end of the summer.
What Summer Staff positions need to be filled?
A few major positions include: Assistant to the Director, Spiritual Formation Leader, Worship Leader, Store Manager, Work Site Coordinator, Hospitality Coordinator, Community Outreach Coordinator.
Summer Staff will be involved in a variety of activities including programming, facilitating work projects, organizing intentional ministry opportunities, working closely with community members, developing personal ministry with Jamaicans, and assuring that student groups are receiving the highest quality of service. Therefore, it is crucial that we have staff members that are self-starting, highly motivated, strive for excellence, and committed to Christ.
Will there be full-time Won By One To Jamaica Staff in Harmons?
Yes. Josh Shaffer (and family) and Loyd Jackson (and family) will live in Harmons and direct the project throughout the summer. Finley and Ruby Johnson live at the Harmony House year-round and will, therefore, also be there throughout the summer.
What are the dates for a Summer Staff position?
Because summer trips begin and end on Sundays, the dates can fluctuate slightly from summer to summer. This summer will begin with a staff retreat in the States near the end of May. The staff will then fly directly to Jamaica for a time of orientation. The first of the summer teams will arrive on Sunday, June 6 with the final team leaving on August 8. We will have 2-3 days of debriefing before returning home.
Orientation week will be dedicated to job orientation, re-acclimation to Jamaican culture, preparing for the student groups, and team building.
What type of personal ministry will I be involved with while in Jamaica?
Besides facilitating ministry opportunities for students, each Summer Staff member is required to spend an extensive amount of time with a local Jamaican in a mentoring relationship.
